Act of Terrorism or Unclean Power

One thing I noticed in Phuket, was that every time it rained, the power would go off. All the power cables buzz and blue arcs of electricity jump across insulators. Here is an example of what the power poles look like.

Kata Beach Power Lines

On the second morning in Novotel at Patong, I awoke to the sound of distant explosions.

As I looked out the window, I saw large flashes in the distance, it looked and sounded like bombs were going off. These flashes, and sounds got closer and closer. Each time one would go off, part of Patong would go black. It seemed that the only power left was in and around the Novotel. BANG!!! Sparks go up in the air, as the two Novotel power transformers explode. Power is off, the whole of Patong is now black. Within moments, the emergency generators of the hotel kick into action, and partial power is restored.

I still don't know why they exploded, but I know what I saw, I just wasn't quick enough to get my camera to record the action.
